George J. Fortunato, Founder and President Emeritus formed Medi-Tech International in the early 1970’s along with his wife Jackie. The name Fortunato in Italian means fortunate, prosperous and lucky. However it was a series of not so fortunate events that led to the development of Spandage™. A group of people from the U.S. were touring Italy and during their trip one member of their party sustained a serious injury on his arm and began bleeding profusely. A round of cheese hanging in a nearby delicatessen was cut down to remove the elastic netting. After placing a towel around the man’s arm, the netting was placed over the towel to hold it until he could be treated at a nearby hospital.
Back in the U.S. around the same time, another man was in the hospital recovering from surgery. The dressing on the surgical incision had to be changed often and each time that the tape was removed, the good skin around the incision began to tear away. Blisters formed on his skin and it took quite some time for the incision and surrounding tissue to heal, but George Fortunato did heal. Based upon his experience and upon learning about the incident in Italy, he realized that there was a need for a product that could promote healing without the use of tape. From these two unfortunate events, Spandage was born!
Our first product Spandage™ is the original tubular elastic dressing retainer net, which replaces the need for adhesive tape and makes dressing changes easier, faster and more comfortable for the patient. Research and development of innovative wound management products is ongoing at Medi-Tech as we continue to add to our growing portfolio and now offer a wide selection of specialty wound management products.
We are committed to the development of environmentally safe as well as “Latex Free” products and packaging for the healthcare industry that assist healthcare professionals in providing sound clinical outcomes leading to a higher quality of life for the patient population. We do this in a manner that is respectful to our employees, business associates, diverse workforce, environment and the community at large.
